J.D. Neubauer, LMFT

One of the first things I consider essential in therapy is transparency; in that light, I want you to know me a little before you read about me as a therapist. Before joining Insight Therapy Group, I received my master’s degree at Mount Mercy University. I have two cats, spend time with my husband, and love to read. I also want you to know that I identify as a genderfluid gay person because I want you to feel as comfortable as possible with me before we start working together on your healing journey.

I consider you the expert on what is going on with you, including your feelings, worries, and concerns. In a collaborative shared space, we can find new meaning in the problems you experience. As we go through life, roadblocks and barriers to success are inevitable. My goal is to provide an open and accepting space where all people feel heard and accepted throughout the therapeutic experience. I offer a brave space for adults, teens, couples, and families from all backgrounds and populations seeking therapy. I am committed to acceptance and mutual respect.

I come from a strength-based approach which is influenced by Internal Family Systems (IFS). When I am not using IFS, I am direct and logical, which fits into many evidence-based practices. I am also a geek-aware therapist who can help you with your daily battles. No matter which direction we go in therapy, the goal is to help you change, progress, and become a better version of yourself.

I enjoy working with individuals, kids 16 and up, LGBTQ+, neurodivergence, and couples. As a kink-aware and sex-positive therapist, I maintain an open-minded approach. I am supportive of traditional and non-traditional relationships. I am skilled at working with clients who experience trauma, anxiety, gender dysphoria, autism, ADHD, and depression.

J.D. offers in-person and telehealth appointments at our Cedar Rapids, IA office.

Prior to joining Insight Therapy Group, I received my master’s degree at Mount Mercy University, I have two cats, spend time with my husband and I love to read. I also want you to know that I go by J.D. and identify as a genderfluid gay person because I want you to feel comfortable with me before we start working together on your healing journey.

I consider you the expert on what is going on with you, including your feelings, worries, and concerns. In a collaborative and shared space, we can find new meaning in the problems you experience. As we go through life, roadblocks and barriers to success are inevitable. My goal is to provide an open and accepting space where all people feel heard and accepted throughout the therapeutic experience. I offer a brave space for adults, teens, couples, and families from all backgrounds and populations seeking therapy, and I am committed to acceptance and mutual respect. I maintain a strengths-based approach, and my job is to work with you to navigate and solve problems that can sometimes feel difficult to manage. I am here as a facilitator for your sessions, but our sessions are yours to direct.

I enjoy working with individuals, children 16 and up, LGBTQ+, couples, and partnerships. I am also skilled at working with clients who experience trauma, anxiety, gender dysphoria, and depression. I am also a geek-aware therapist and can help you succeed in your battles in life which will help you with change, progress, and becoming a better version of yourself. I am also a kink-aware and sex-positive therapist who maintains an open-minded approach. I am supportive of traditional and non-traditional relationships.

I have training in Internal Family Systems (IFS) which is effective for individuals and Intimacy from the Inside Out (IFIO) which is effective for partnerships and family work. Both of these ways of doing therapy take the approach of examining our inner world and identifying its parts. “Parts” can be quickly understood as pieces of us that exist in our daily lives. For example, one part of you wants to get better, but another part of you feels terrible. At times, our parts can take on roles that get in the way of us being our full Self. Through IFS, we work with your parts to resolve their concerns and create a Self-lead life. I integrate strategies from a variety of evidence-based practice therapies, mindfulness, and healthy coping strategies to assist you in better management and alleviation of your symptoms.
