Krissy Gates, DNP, PMHNP-BC, ARNP

I am an independently licensed Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP), Board Certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP-BC). I have experience in community behavioral health, along with 10+ years of nursing experience, including many years of Emergency Department experience, most recently at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics (UIHC), and inpatient psychiatric experience with a specialization in geriatrics. During my time at UIHC, I helped to lead and develop the Behavioral Health Services (BHS): Service Without Territories nursing team. This team was the focus of my doctoral project which evaluated the outcomes of the team, and initiated proactive measures throughout the inpatient units at UIHC to prevent agitation and patient restraint. I am passionate about helping those with mental health needs and prevention of psychiatric emergencies.

My philosophy of care is a holistic, person centered care with an overall goal to minimize suffering. In addition to medication management, I incorporate Motivational Interviewing and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy techniques into my care management. Your story and perspective is essential in understanding and managing your mental health care needs. I am here to help you be the best you can be! I want to help you lead a happy healthy life.

My areas of specialty include working with ages 5+, LGBTQ+ community, crisis management, attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism, intellectual disabilities, dementia/Alzheimer’s disease, mood disorders, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and many other populations. I have training in buprenorphine/MAT (Medication Assisted Treatment) for opioid addiction and am working on establishing service opportunities for clients in need. As a provider, I maintain an open mind and am excited to learn about and further my experience with new and emerging treatment options for my clients. I am open to signing attestation for the Iowa Department of Public Health for medical cannabis via OMC (Office of Medical Cannabis) for established clients with appropriate diagnoses.
